Let's talk whitetails.

Is it to late?

New postby Big_Willie24 » Fri Jun 25, 2010 12:33 pm

I have never planted any food plots and I was wondering if it was to late to do it now?

There are plenty of great plots that can still be planted. Brassica's and rape blends can be planted into August and ripen up just in time for bow season. I planted a field too early last year and the deer destroyed it a month before season so sometimes later is better and make sure the field is big enough to support the population.

brassicas work great. you can also plant clover plots in early to mid-august and the deer will destroy them throughout the fall. we mixed rape with clover and wheat last fall and the results were delicious.

Don't worry about me, Willie. Poor old Ryan will just try to get by with a doe or two. You guys have your fun in Kansas. -/-

Kidding aside, I really like the rape, and white clover for a fall plot. This year I'm going to add a couple of different turnips, and see how they like that. I'm also leaving standing soybeans, and corn (if it grows well).

The neighbor, however, sprayed his round-up-ready soybeans on a day when the wind blew the chemicals directly toward my open-pollinated corn.
We'll see how well it does.

Find your seed soon. You should be planting in a few weeks.
Shut up, and hunt.
